Mageia Linux

From Linux Beta

Mageia Linux is a **community-driven, French-based distribution** that was forked from **Mandriva Linux** in 2010. It is known for its excellent graphical configuration tools, stability, and focus on providing a complete, easy-to-use desktop experience for new and experienced users alike.

Base and Philosophy

[edit | edit source]
  • Base Distribution: A direct continuation and fork of the former Mandriva Linux codebase (which itself was based on Red Hat Linux).
  • Goal: To create a secure, stable, and flexible desktop and server operating system, managed entirely by a non-profit organization (Mageia.org) to ensure community control and continuity.

Key Features

[edit | edit source]
  • Mageia Control Center (MCC): This is Mageia's most distinguishing feature: a comprehensive, intuitive, graphical control panel that centralizes system administration tasks, from managing hardware to configuring network settings and software sources.
  • Package Management: Uses the RPM package format, managed via the **urpmi** package manager (inherited from Mandriva). Urpmi is known for its efficient handling of dependencies.
  • Desktop Environment: Offers excellent support for virtually all major desktop environments, including **KDE Plasma** (often the flagship edition), **GNOME**, **Xfce**, and **Cinnamon**, providing choice for the user.
  • Release Cycle: Follows a predictable, fixed release cycle, typically releasing a new version every 18-24 months, balancing stability with up-to-date software.
